Showering in the Dark – Paris, France

Dark-Shower

Have you ever stayed at a hotel that required putting your room key card into a slot to turn on the electricity? I remember the first time that I did. I was 22 years old and on a layover in Paris, France. Having just worked the red-eye from Washington DC, I was exhausted and all I wanted was a hot shower and a bed.

Upon entering the room, I noticed that the lights didn’t work, the TV didn’t work, anything that required power, did not work! I thought about going back downstairs to get a new room, but then I thought, who needs light to sleep? And it’s not like I need a TV, I’m in Paris! However, taking a shower in complete darkness was a different situation and a first for me. But, despite remembering where I put the soap, it was actually quite pleasant. The water seemed much more intense when it hit my face and the absence of light was very soothing.

After waking up from a much needed nap, I got dressed and was ready to hit the town. Just before leaving the hotel, I figured I would let the receptionist know that my room required some maintenance. She giggled and said, “did you put your keycard into the slot?” I responded with an embarrassed laugh and a no. I didn’t bother to share my experience with the rest of the crew, but I am glad that it happened. To this day, I’ll sometimes enjoy a dark shower, but these are all by choice of course. LOL
