Meeting the Karen Long Neck Tribe

Meeting the Karen Long Neck Tribe

You may have seen them on the Discovery channel or perhaps even some pictures in a National Geographic Magazine, but meeting the Karen Long Neck Tribe in person is definitely an exotic experience that most travelers will love. This group historically lived in the hills of Myanmar (formerly Burma). After decades of political unrest, they began fleeing to neighboring Thailand.

Best recognized for their elongated necks, the Karen women wear heavy brass rings around their necks, forearms, and shins. Despite the appearance of having a long neck, this is actually an illusion. Instead, the weight of the coils press down on the collarbones and ribcage, compressing them. Nonetheless, it’s definitely a sight to be seen. Girls start wearing the rings around 5 years old and more rings are gradually added as they grow older.

The biggest question people have is why do these women do this? Well, I guess the top reason is simply tradition. It is part of their heritage. Researching, you will find a number of reasons why. Some say it is to make the woman unattractive so they will be less likely to be captured by slave traders. Others say the opposite, that an extra-long neck is considered a sign of great beauty and wealth and that it will attract a better husband. It is also thought that the tradition actually started as protection from tigers. Years ago, several Karen tribe women were killed by tigers, so the leader of the tribe decided to have the women wear these brass neck rings to protect his tribe from extinction.

You will find a number of these villages along the border of Myanmar and Thailand. Baan Huay Pu Keng and Baan Nam Phiang Din are two of the most popular and considered to be the oldest in Thailand. The Karen men are mostly field workers and farmers and the women have a rich history of crafting. They are very skilled at wood carving and weaving.

Meeting the Karen Long Neck Tribe was a very pleasant experience. They were all super friendly and I felt very welcomed. It was definitely unforgettable getting to spend an afternoon with these very sweet and unique people.
